Run for the Border

Me n Toecutter and his Ol' took a little trip towards Canada last summer. I rode the shovel and they took his trusty Buell chop. It was the same day as the local HOG chapters "run for the border" run. Funny watching a bunch of folks on baggers trying to figure out what the hell we were riding at gas stops. They were heading back, and we were going towards the border (Canada). This obviously confused some folks. Lots of waving going on, pirate garb, etc. I think the funniest thing was that I forgot to hook up my power wire when I put my new battery in, thus creating no charge. Have you ever tried to bump start a 74 FLH? Shit. Kicks your ass when that back tire just slides. Fun anyway, and entertainment for onlookers. Had kick ass dinner, made it almost back home on battery. Almost. This is when we pulled over due to bike running like shit. I had never ridden this bike more than about 20 miles before we left, and was clueless as to the charging situation. The Shovel had sat for YEARS before I took it over, I never went through anything really, just went for it. I feared the worst, was eyeballing a good place to sleep where I pulled over. Found the offending disconnected charging system, 1 more bumpstart and it fired right up, ready for more. That is one of the best feelings ever. New cars and bikes are nice, but really just kind of boring to me for some reason. They take that little nagging feeling away that you might just break down, which sucks at the time, but ads something to the trip. I enjoy the gamble.

Kinda wish I still had this. Waaaay too much fun to ride on the streets, hard not to jump off sidewalks and generally terrorize. Too tempting.

Econo Update

So when I took the carb apart, a few sneaky parts fell out. I stuck em back in there the way I figured they were supposed to go thus filling the float bowl and flooding the shit outta the carb. Doh. Took it apart again and corrected my mistake. Ran it to operating temp again, test drive etc and its ready to go! Now I can actually get to the shop again and finish my damn bike.

So the Econo has made it home, on a trailer. Thing ran GREAT cruising no problem @ about 65 from Portland to Hood River. Fresh 240 6 and fresh overbuilt C-4 auto, Ford 9" full of highway gears. Grabbed some gas and a bit to eat in Hood River, then cruised through town to get back on highway. Whats this? Van doesnt wanna run anymore? Shit. Hooked it to Hatty's 3/4 ton truck and towed about 30 ft to a parking lot. Dark and hard to see anything. hit Wal-Mart, starter fluid, $23 tool kit, flashlight. Went back and sprayed some ether down its throat and whammo-fired right up. Drove through town again to make sure it was good to go. Nope. Did it again! lucky pull-over spot and parked it for the night. Motel Room. Damn! Returned in morning to find front doors unlocked, weird cause I locked em? Nothing gone, nothing messed with, nothing moved. Stoked. Hit U-Haul and grabbed a damn trailer and towed er home. Messed with for awhile but couldnt find gremlin. Got fresh look at it today, removed carb and had a look in the float bowl...whats this? Some weird block off plug laying in bottom of float bowl, thus hangin up the float. Weird. Took out offending loose part, buttoned the carb back up, and she fired right up. Ran it for about 5 minutes, then gas decided to burp out of carb. Come ON!! Shut it down to avoid fire death. Stupid re-man Holly 1 barrel! Now I gotta track down a gasket kit for the carb. No problem just annoying. Stoked to have it home, and its super clean and set up for the long haul. I let go of the steering wheel at about 80 and it tracked straight down the road, hard to believe for a 40+ year old Econo. Dude about cried when I drove it away. Another random adventure, sucked to break down in new ride, but kinda fun too.
